Behind the Brand
Activist Skincare was founded by skincare aficionado and lifelong environmental advocate Allison Callaway. Allison struggled with acne for many years, visiting countless dermatologists and trying all kinds of treatments, but nothing seemed to work. Over time, however, Allison realized the importance of self-care that is more than skin deep, and underwent a complete mindset shift. Focusing on improving her nutrition and well-being, she discovered the powerful impact of holistic wellness on her skin and overall health.
Later, while working as an art director for a series of large fashion brands and feeling misaligned with her work's contribution to consumerist culture, she began to explore the concept of business as a force for good. Allison began to attend entrepreneur meetups in her area and developed an idea for a socially-responsible company merging skincare and environmentalism. She took a formulation course to learn how to develop her own products, and over the course of a few years developed a full line of ethically-sourced, high-performance, and refillable skincare that combines the efficacy of clinical products with the utmost respect for our bodies and planet.
Allison started making products in her own kitchen, bringing in chemists to help tweak formulas when necessary, and partnering with sustainably-minded content creators to get the word out. Eventually, Allison moved production into a studio-lab in Southern California, where the Activist Skincare team manufactures its products in small batches today. With its certified organic and cruelty-free ingredients, sustainable and refillable packaging, and 1% For the Planet commitment, Activist Skincare has quickly developed into one of the most sustainable and ethical beauty brands on the market.
