Behind the Brand

Pan’s was founded by Michael Pan. The brand’s story traces back to 2008, when Michael was visiting extended family in Malaysia. Michael had tasted a homemade jerky-like snack that his vegetarian cousin was making and selling at the time, and he immediately fell in love with the taste and texture. He initially thought it was pork-based but was shocked to discover that it was actually a family recipe featuring shiitake mushrooms. Though Michael spent the next 5 years working in the corporate world as an electrical engineer, he couldn’t stop thinking about this mushroom jerky and worked on refining the concept in his free time. Fortunately, after a startup that he helped launch was eventually acquired in 2016, Michael finally found himself with the time and resources to commit to Pan’s.

Michael started out by importing jerky from Malaysia. He updated the family recipe, moved production to Portland, Oregon, and started experimenting with different flavors. A self-funded one-man team, Michael worked on everything from marketing to building the website to researching import regulations. The business grew steadily after its launch but got its big break in 2020, when it was featured on Shark Tank and landed an investment from Mark Cuban. After the episode aired, Pan’s received a whopping 35,000 orders (equating to about $1 million in sales), which took several months to fulfill. This was just the beginning of Pan’s spectacular growth, with the brand’s cult-favorite mushroom jerky becoming a staple in many pantries across the country.

What has been your most unforgettable moment (good or bad) while building your company? - +

Appearing on Shark Tank was an incredible experience. Until the segment airs, you really don’t know what is going to happen. We ended up selling 5x the amount we were advised to anticipate, which was exciting and validating. Unfortunately the next couple months were extremely challenging trying to keep up with demand. At the end of it all, we’re grateful for the experience and learned a lot from it.

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? - +

I love playing video games with my son, home improvement projects, and reading books!

What is an essential part of your daily routine? - +

For much of my life, I’ve struggled with sleep routines and falling asleep, which would cause me to wake up exhausted the next day. As the week went on, this would snowball each day and I felt like I could barely make it through the week. I spent a lot of time working on ways to “shut down” at night, and I’ve found that reading a book helps me wind down, go to bed at a reasonable time, and be more productive the following day.

What is your biggest pet peeve? - +

Receiving emails with many ellipses................ I don’t know how to interpret them!

What is one thing most people don’t know about you? - +

I often talk about the paternal side of my family who are Chinese Malay. My mother is from Peru (she’s Chinese, peruvian, and Italian), so I actually have quite a multicultural family.

What do you want to be remembered for? - +

Related to my career, I’d like to be remembered for making people happy by sharing this mushroom snack that my family had been making for a long time. Not only do I want to share this delicious snack, but also the experience of discovering something new from a different culture.
