Wonder Monday Review: Honest Thoughts On The Healthier Cheesecakes

By Isabel O.

Healthy cheesecakes — too good to be true?

Typically, when I think of cheesecakes, I think of those giant slices of cream, butter, and sugar from The Cheesecake Factory. Or those thinly-sliced cheesecake slices from your local supermarket that always leave something to be desired.

So I was definitely intrigued when I came across Wonder Monday in an Instagram ad.

The ad displayed these small (bite-sized?) cheesecake rounds, individually-packaged in little containers. Apparently, the cheesecakes were high-protein, low-carb, keto-friendly, gluten-free, grain-free… you get it, all the good stuff. To be completely honest, it sounded a little too good to be true, but I decided to check them out anyway.

The Brand

Wonder Monday makes high-protein, low-carb, and gluten-free cheesecakes. The founders, Candace and Jonathan, created the company after discovering how many carbs, added sugars, and artificial ingredients actually went into traditional cheesecakes. While searching for healthier options, they realized that there wasn’t anything on the market that met their standards. So, they set out to reinvent this classic dessert — minus all the sugar, carbs, and junk. (Fun fact: Candace and Jonathan started recipe testing in their own kitchen and spent over a year perfecting their healthy cheesecake recipes!)

The Product

Wonder Monday’s cheesecakes are much healthier than your traditional sugar-laden cheesecakes — each cheesecake contains just 3-4g net carbs and no added sugar. They’re diabetic- and keto-friendly as they use allulose (a naturally-occurring sweetener found in foods like figs and raisins) instead of sugar, and they were formulated to minimize blood sugar spikes. The crust is also made with almond flour rather than wheat, meaning the cheesecakes are gluten- and grain-free. Finally, each cheesecake contains 10g or more of protein, which is over 20% of your recommended daily intake!

Wonder Monday uses super clean ingredients in their cheesecakes, and you won’t find anything artificial here. The ingredients vary slightly depending on flavor, but check out the ingredients lists for some of their popular flavors:

  • CLASSIC PLAIN: Pasteurized Cultured Milk and Cream, Allulose, Eggs, Milk Protein, Almond Flour, Cream, Vanilla Extract, Lemon Powder (Citric Acid, Lemon Oil, Lemon Juice), Cinnamon, Salt, Less than 2% of: Guar Gum, Carob Gum, Stevia, Natural Flavors

The Review

Full disclaimer: I didn’t buy these cheesecakes from the Wonder Monday website — a friend of mine actually gave me some to try, and I’m glad they did because it’s quite pricey at $79 per 12 cheesecakes on the Wonder Monday site (which comes out to about $7 per cheesecake when you factor in shipping costs). But you can take this price down a little if you subscribe or order over $100 worth of cheesecakes for free shipping. Also, the quality of the ingredients in these cheesecakes justified the cost for me.

Looking past the price, the cheesecakes looked delicious and I was excited to try them. They have to be stored either in the freezer or in the fridge, and the company recommends that you let the cheesecakes thaw for about 10 minutes in room temperature (for the classic creamy consistency).

I tried two of Wonder Monday’s popular flavors: the Classic Plain and the Strawberry Bliss.

As I saw in the Instagram ad, the cheesecakes came in small individually-packaged circular containers. The Classic Plain looked like a classic New York cheesecake, and the Strawberry Bliss looked exactly the same but had a red (strawberry) swirl on the top of the cheesecake.

Here’s the good stuff: the cheesecakes honestly blew my mind with how “normal” they tasted — they tasted like a traditional cheesecake that I would get in a restaurant or a grocery store. I was very, very, very surprised.

They were super rich, and the texture was pretty much the same as other cheesecakes I’ve had in the past. The creaminess, smoothness, and chew were all spot on.

My personal favorite part of a cheesecake is the crust, and while Wonder Monday’s crust might have been a little more crumbly than that of other cheesecakes, it still tasted darn good. I really couldn't believe that the crust was made out of almond flour and was completely gluten- and grain-free.

I was genuinely enjoying the cheesecakes, and because of how rich and dense they were, I actually felt filled up very quickly. I felt pretty full after just 4-5 bites of the cheesecake and still had half of it leftover.

Overall, Wonder Monday shocked me with how good their cheesecakes tasted. It was the first time I’ve tried a “healthier” cheesecake, and Wonder Monday absolutely did not disappoint. The fact that I was able to enjoy a regular-tasting cheesecake — without any of the sugar — was just magical.

Needless to say, Wonder Monday cheesecakes have taken over my freezer. It's become a regular craving, but with zero guilt, I'll be happily enjoying them for breakfast + lunch + dinner!
