Behind the Brand
Coconut Whisk was founded by life partners and former Minnesota State University classmates Bella Lam and Myles Olsen. As college students, both Bella and Myles decided to go vegan after watching a documentary and learning how impactful the diet was on their health, the environment, and animals. However, as a frequent baker and Betty Crocker lover, Bella slowly began to realize that she couldn’t find any gluten-free and vegan baking mixes on the market that met her standards. That same week, their college happened to be hosting a business plan competition, and Bella and Myles decided to enter with the concept for a healthier baking mix brand. When they ended up winning the $3,000 prize for the food division, the couple knew they had found their calling.
From their college apartment, Bella and Myles dove headfirst into building what would eventually become Coconut Whisk. They spent a year formulating their first baking mix recipe, investing a few hundred dollars of their own savings into the business. Once they had a recipe they were happy with, Bella and Myles launched it at farmers’ markets in their area, gathering feedback and continually reformulating. The baking mixes were an instant hit and quickly picked up by local co-ops and large retailers like Hy-Vee and Target. Fast forward to today, Coconut Whisk has grown into a mission-driven, better-for-you food brand enabling healthy indulgences & positive kitchen experiences.
