Behind the Brand

Three Spirit was established by co-founders Dash Lilley, Tati Mercer, and Meeta Gournay. The idea for Three Spirit was originally conceived by husband-and-wife duo Dash and Tati, who wanted to create a third way of drinking — besides “drinking” and “not drinking” — for people who enjoyed the social aspects of alcohol but not the side effects. They also both felt that too many non-alcoholic drinks were focused on what was missing, rather than what was going into them. Dash and Tati had the idea to create a line of functional non-alcoholic drinks made entirely of active plant ingredients, with the booze-free buzz coming from botanical alchemy. When Meeta — Tati’s friend and former coworker — heard about the concept, she was immediately excited and joined the Three Spirit team.

Dash, Tati, and Meeta partnered with an array of experts — including world-class bartenders, plant scientists, phytochemists, pharmaceutical scientists, and food scientists — to formulate their first line of mood-shifting drinks. Together, the team studied alcohol’s effects on the human nervous system, enlisting the help of herbalists and foragers to identify plants that could mimic a similar effect on dopamine, serotonin, and GABA in the brain. They then developed various techniques to extract the desired flavor and functional properties from plant material. Officially launched in late 2018, Three Spirit developed three functional drinks — Social Elixir, Livener, and Nightcap — each perfectly suited for different moods and times. Today, the company continues to bring new experiences to the world that have never before been sensed or savored.

Meet the Maker

What has been your most unforgettable moment (good or bad) while building your company? - +

DASH: Eating. I think I get most pleasure from eating and drinking and enjoy experiencing wonderful flavours, textures, smells, creativity, simplicity and deliciousness. For me cooking and drinks creation is alchemy, and alchemy is magic. Transforming an ingredient by combining with others or by using processes such as heat, time, fermentation, infusion and so on. So I love following my nose and my stomach to find amazing places to eat and drink. I am lucky to live in London where there is no shortage of culinary delights both old and new. I like knowing where my food comes from so i enjoy getting close to growers, farmers and enjoy shopping at local markets. I love feeding my kids, try to introduce them to new things which is always pretty hit and miss but very satisfying to see them eating real healthy food rather than all the crap that is out there and hard to avoid!

What is your favorite thing to do in your free time? - +

DASH: Exercise / football is my balm. I can get pretty cranky pretty fast if I am not active. Running, playing football or doing yoga and capoeira connects me with my body and frees me from my busy mind - which is needed. On top of that I have played football all my life and it is way more than exercise. It provides such an important social and competitive platform and is a way to hang with friends and sneak in a cheeky pint in the pub afterward - all key to my mental wellbeing. My hack for a supercharged day is drinking really good high grade cacao in large doses after exercise on an empty stomach. It gives me really good focus and energy with a wonderful clarity, way more effective than coffee and 100x more gentle and nourishing for mind, body, and soul. It's my top tip!

What is an essential part of your daily routine? - +

TATIANA: I’m a night owl, I like to work late when everyone else is quiet, plus I’m based in the UK and with our US business growing like it is I need to be online and available. But this is also a good excuse for my lack of being a morning person. I really hate a rushed start to my day, rarely possible with kids and a business to run, but I will savour anymore time in bed, or just not rushing in the morning, I like to keep it calm if I can. I’ve also always been a sucker for skincare, indulging myself with products and I always take baths. I grew up in an old British country house which had a lot of baths and just one shower we had been installed in a cupboard so I think I’m at my happiest bathing with some magnesium salts.

What is your biggest pet peeve? - +

MEETA: I like to think I do what I say I'll do. I don't like it when people over promise, under deliver. I’m a real do-er, and like to hit my goals, and drive my team to do so, so I think when people say something will happen and it doesn’t I get frustrated.

TATI: Meeta is so phenomenal it's hard to keep up, so sometimes we have to remind her that we’re not all able to execute at such a level! But Meeta is our not so secret sauce to all that we achieve

What is one thing most people don’t know about you? - +

MEETA: I'm British, I used to love hip hop/rap, I love dancing, I did a lot of acting and directing.

TATI: You would not guess this about her!

What do you want to be remembered for? - +

TATI: We have a company that is about creating a new way to feel good, and whilst we’re not anti-alcohol, being part of a movement that is re-writing the rulebook when it comes to socialising is just a really exciting thing to be part of. We get such emotive and amazing messages from people, where we genuinely seem to be supporting positive change that I think if we can be remembered for creating Three Spirit and it pushing boundaries to how people think about their approach to socialising and unwinding then I’d be proud.
